During my decade-long professional career in journalism, I have produced work that I am so proud of. I’ve helped real people get their needs, their voices, and their stories heard by millions. I’ve honored that my reporting has been featured in books, academic papers, and the resource pages of professional organizations. And, in a stunning feat I still struggle to wrap my head around, using journalism to uplift the voices of residents in Griffin Park, an Orlando housing project, led to a partial removal of the highways that encircled their homes.
I’m in awe that I’ve been privileged to do that work. In the last few years, however, I’ve struggled with calling myself a reporter. It just didn’t feel right. I was less intrigued with the process of reporting. So I shifted my focus, and I began to see myself as a writer and storyteller who wants to explain the complexity of the world as best and as simply as I can.
It feels like a more appropriate title. I use my words to craft stories, shape ideas, and communicate meaning—whether through essays, cultural commentary, personal narrative, or other creative formats. I see writing as a deeper practice, where analysis meets artistry, and the latter was often missing from reporting for me. I’ve also taken a keen interest in lifting the curtain for readers, so to speak, by interviewing experts and sharing that information in its purest form, a conversation transcript, to break dense topics into digestible chunks. It’s more engaging, removing the “boiled down take” of reported pieces, and they feel as if you’re eavesdropping on a thoughtful conversation between a curious writer and a pro dedicated to their craft.
